Neil Marshall’s Epic Thriller Centurion Takes Lightworks into Battle
Director Neil Marshall’s latest adrenaline-fused thriller, Centurion, relays a gripping 2nd century battle between Romans and their savage enemies – the Picts - lead by Pict Warrior Etain (Olga Kurylenko). Following a bloody Pictish raid and ambush, Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender) focuses his efforts on protecting his Roman platoon, while attempting to rescue his captured General behind enemy lines.
Centurion was filmed across the snow-lit Scottish countryside from February to April 2009, and cut at Goldcrest Films in Soho, London. Editor Chris Gill worked with 2 assistants and a VFX editor to conceive Centurion’s powerful storyline, and then brought the film to life using 3 Lightworks systems connected to shared storage.
Conquering the Roman Empire
Editor Chris Gill is no stranger to cutting ominous box-office hits, as his past credits include the critically acclaimed 28 Days Later and its sequel, 28 Weeks Later. “Centurion’s subject matter made it a perfect fit for Lightworks. It required multiple cameras to catch all angles of action. Same thing for 28 Days Later… 33 cameras were required for a sequence that lasted only seconds. For films like these - for the sheer volume of material – Lightworks is fantastic,” Chris said.
The Lightworks system includes advanced multi-camera editing with unlimited sources and dual-SDI outputs. Editors can simultaneously view source angles in sync with the edit. A fast camera-to-edit solution goes hand-in-hand with multicamera capabilities - a must for Centurion’s monumental battles. “Speed was crucial for my editing. Lightworks has no competition when it comes to speed – it is truly the quickest and simplest way to shoot and edit organic footage,” Chris added.
No action shots would be complete without orchestrated sound effects to heighten audience emotion and tension. Lightworks offers advanced sub-frame audio editing, direct-to-timeline voice over tools, Mackie protocol support, real-time playback of mixed sample and bit rates, and guaranteed real-time multi-track audio - ideal for matching rhythm drums alongside Centurion’s bloodspattered battle sequences.
“Music is always a big issue for the editor and when dealing with fight scenes of a large proportion, it is crucial for impact. Lightworks tells me if any portion of my multiple layers of audio tracks and video are not in sync and I can easily go in and fix them. It saves me so much time, and I never have to worry about it,” Chris commented.
"Side by Side we battle onward"
“People can be reluctant to switch editors. If you haven’t tried Lightworks - I highly recommend it. I never have to worry about syncs and it never crashes. It’s unbelievably reliable and its versatility helps craft extremely powerful stories – no matter the genre... I look forward to seeing its success in the industry build with technology enhancements yet to come,” Chris says.
About Lightworks technology
Academy® and Emmy® award-winning Lightworks was introduced to the editing scene in 1989 as the most advanced professional editing system on the market. Its intuitive controls, real-time synchronization, and multi-camera ingest and editing features still remain unmatched by top industry players. The Lightworks system is regularly utilized by a variety of award-winning editors, including Thelma Schoonmaker (Shutter Island). Building upon blockbuster-buzz, including Centurion and Shutter Island, EditShare announced plans to make Lightworks into the most advanced Open Source editing solution available in the industry at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention (NAB) in 2010. With a free Lightworks download made available to all customers, users are able to familiarize themselves with the Lightworks editing system and its multitude of features including: true shared projects, instant save, 3D editorial functionality, Universal Media File support, native RED editing, native 2K support with DPX and RED, native DNxHD and ProRes support, dual outputs, and a format-independent timeline.
“This is the holy grail of NLE announcements. Anyone that was ever reluctant to switch editors should truly reconsider,” said Gill. “Lightworks already provides so much creativity because of its ease of use and phenomenal speed. Going Open Source brings a whole new level of creative flexibility to the table. I look forward to utilizing these new features and seeing its success in the industry continue to build.”
